Gangnam-gu Announces Contest for Temporary Construction Fence Artworks... 39 Pieces Installed at Over 100 Construction Sites as Part of the 8th Term Street Design Project -

"My Work on the Hot Streets of Gangnam!"

Gangnam-gu (District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong) is holding the ‘Green Smart Canvas Art Contest’ to decorate temporary construction site fences with beautiful design works, and is accepting submissions until the 25th of this month.

Started in the 8th term of the elected government, this contest utilizes construction site temporary fences as urban galleries to add artistic value and vitality to the city. From 2022 to the first half of this year, 39 works were selected and installed at over 100 construction sites located at large construction sites, main roads, and busy commercial areas. Unique works embodying the dreams and hopes of Gangnam have filled the streets of Gangnam, increasing the contest’s popularity. In the first half of 2023, 82 submissions were received for 12 spots. Encouraged by this response, the contest will be held again in the second half of the year, accepting works from September 21 to October 25.

The theme of the works is a free expression of Gangnam-gu’s slogan, “A city where dreams gather, Gangnam drawing the future.” Anyone aged 19 or older can participate, either individually or in teams of up to three people. Each individual (or team) can submit up to two works. Submissions should include the application form, artwork images (ai, jpg files), artwork description, and judging panels attached to the notice on the Gangnam-gu Office website, and be sent via email.

During judging, incentives will be given to Gangnam residents, young artists, and artists with disabilities. Gangnam residents and young artists will receive an additional 5% of the total score, while artists with disabilities will receive an additional 10%. Young artists are defined as domestic artists aged 19 to under 39 who have an art activity certificate issued by the Korea Artists Welfare Foundation or have a record of artistic activities. Incentives cannot be combined. Twelve final works will be selected in November, and each individual (or team) will be awarded a prize of 2.2 million KRW.

Jo Seong-myeong, Mayor of Gangnam-gu, stated, “Gangnam has more building construction such as reconstruction and redevelopment compared to other areas, so the role of temporary fences serving as galleries is significant,” and added, “We will create streets that fully showcase Gangnam’s charm with beautiful artworks embodying Gangnam’s slogan.”
