In 2025, 10-Day Vacation Possible When Using Annual Leave During Chuseok
The long 6-day Chuseok holiday is coming to an end. Many office workers are expressing their regrets.
The upcoming 2024 Lunar New Year holiday falls on a Saturday, and the Monday following the weekend is designated as a substitute holiday. Accordingly, next year's Lunar New Year holiday will last for 4 days, from February 9 to 12.

Next year's Chuseok holiday will be shorter than this year’s, lasting 5 days. The period off is longer than the Lunar New Year holiday. The holiday starts on Monday, the day after the weekend, allowing for 5 days off including the weekend.
Next year’s National Foundation Day (Gaecheonjeol) and Hangul Day fall on Thursday and Wednesday respectively, not adjacent to the weekend. If you take a day off on Friday, October 4, you can secure a total of 4 days of holiday.
The record-breaking holiday will be in 2025. The 2025 Lunar New Year holiday will be from January 28 to 30, including Monday and Friday. If you take leave on Monday and Friday, you can enjoy a 9-day holiday including the weekends before and after.
However, for office workers, this may be a somewhat sensitive choice. If you can only take a day off on either Monday or Friday, the holiday will be reduced to 5 days.
The best holiday will be the 2025 Chuseok. The Chuseok holiday in the year after next can be taken for 7 consecutive days without designating a temporary holiday or applying for annual leave.
On October 3, 2025, National Foundation Day falls on a Friday. The two-day weekend follows, and the Chuseok holiday begins. The first day of Chuseok coincides with Sunday, and Wednesday, October 8, becomes a substitute holiday. October 9, a public holiday and Thursday, is Hangul Day.
The holiday period from October 3 to October 9, 2025, lasts 7 days, but if October 10 is designated as a temporary holiday, it will become the longest 10-day holiday. Even if a temporary holiday is not designated, using annual leave can allow for a sweet 10-day holiday.
According to the Hyundai Research Institute, the economic effect of holidays is significant. According to a report from March this year, total consumer spending across the economy during a substitute holiday is estimated to reach 2.4 trillion won.
On the other hand, there are criticisms that when the government designates temporary holidays, wages are paid as usual while only the holidays increase, causing companies and employers to bear the cost burden.
