Daegu 'Non-face-to-face Meal Support Platform for Food-insecure Children' Wins Presidential Award... 30,000 Transactions in 3 Months

Daegu City, in collaboration with the local public delivery app ‘Daeguro’, which was first introduced nationwide on June 1, is receiving positive reviews for its operation of the ‘Contactless Child Meal Support Platform.’

At the ‘40th Regional Informatization Research Project Presentation Contest’ hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety from September 19 to 20, Daegu City received the Presidential Award for the project ‘Support for Meals for Vulnerable Children and Establishment of a Contactless Platform.’

Daegu 'Non-face-to-face Meal Support Platform for Food-insecure Children' Wins Presidential Award... 30,000 Transactions in 3 Months Sangyeok Government Complex, Daegu City.

Until now, child meal cards for children at risk of food insecurity could only be used for in-person payments, causing issues such as stigma associated with using the meal cards and over-reliance on convenience stores. However, a system was developed to enable the use of child meal cards through the public delivery app ‘Daeguro,’ allowing children at risk of food insecurity to enjoy healthy meals via contactless orders without worrying about stigma. This was highly praised by judges and attendees on site.

‘Daeguro’ supports the full delivery tip cost from its own budget (30 million KRW in 2023) when payment is made with a child meal card at stores displaying the child meal badge. Additionally, if franchisees apply, payments can be made without a minimum order amount restriction, contributing to providing healthy meals to children from low-income families.

Since the service launch in June, the number of child meal card payments within ‘Daeguro’ reached approximately 30,000 by August, accounting for 4.8% of total orders from June to August, with monthly usage steadily increasing.

Currently, there are about 7,900 franchise stores within the ‘Daeguro’ app that accept child meal cards, and franchise owners registered with Daeguro are actively participating to expand the usage of child meal cards.

‘Daeguro,’ a comprehensive citizen life platform in Daegu that opened its service in August 2021, has achieved 930,000 cumulative downloads, 490,000 members, 500,000 orders, and 120 billion KRW in order amount as of the end of September, continuously growing with 16,000 registered franchise stores.

A representative from ‘Inseong Data,’ the operator of Daeguro, said, “We are doing our best to ensure that no child from low-income families is left out by using the child meal card and to support a healthy meal.”

Economic Director An Jung-gon said, “The fact that the contactless child meal support platform project through Daeguro received the Presidential Award and positive reviews means that Daeguro’s contribution to the local community is significant. We will continue to pay more attention to community contribution activities through Daeguro in the future.”
