North Korea: "Denying Nuclear State Status in Constitution is Sovereignty Violation"…Criticizes UN Security Council

On the 30th, Choe Son-hui, North Korea's Foreign Minister, said in a statement reported by the Korean Central News Agency, "On September 29, the United States and its follower countries convened a closed negotiation (meeting) of the UN Security Council and disgracefully criticized the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's (North Korea's) sacred and inviolable constitutional activities and self-defensive national defense strengthening measures."

This was a strong backlash against the UN Security Council's closed meeting regarding North Korea's constitutional inclusion of the policy to advance its nuclear forces, which was adopted at the Supreme People's Assembly held on the 26th to 27th.

Foreign Minister Choe stated, "We strongly condemn and reject the illegal and outrageous behavior of hostile forces, including the United States, who label our country's rightful exercise of sovereignty as 'provocation' and 'threat,' branding it as a direct challenge to the sovereignty of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and blatant interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state," criticizing the UN Security Council.

He also emphasized, "The constitutionalization of the status as a nuclear-armed state is not merely a constitutional amendment to revise and supplement provisions of the nation's highest law but holds significant meaning as it guarantees a long-term plan for the prosperity and strength of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and establishes a powerful legal weapon to defend nuclear sovereignty." He added, "As long as the imperialist entity called the United States exists, nuclear armament is our country's fateful choice," and warned, "If hostile forces, including the United States, try to force denuclearization upon us or deny or infringe upon our country's constitutional status as a nuclear-armed state, it will be regarded as the most serious sovereignty infringement and unconstitutional act, forcing us to abandon our constitution and system."

North Korea recently enshrined the policy of advancing its nuclear forces in its constitution at the Supreme People's Assembly. This marks the inclusion of the nuclear force policy, which was adopted as a law at last September's Supreme People's Assembly, into the nation's highest law, the constitution.
