Recently, a post titled "50,000 won worth of stocks my father bought 14 years ago" was uploaded on an online community. The original post was written in 2021, but it has become a hot topic again in the online community. According to the story, the father bought 50,000 won worth of Samsung SDS stocks to celebrate the child being the top student in elementary school. The author wrote, "The amount, which was only 50,000 won, has grown to a whopping 24 million won," and added, "After holding on for 14 years (a slang term meaning to endure until the end), I achieved a jackpot with a 50,000% return."

According to the stock statement at the time the original post was written in 2021, the purchase amount was 50,000 won, and the valuation was 24,765,000 won. It is presumed that the stocks were purchased when they were unlisted. The return rate is 49,430%. Applying the recent price (closing price on the 27th: 135,200 won) results in 17.57 million won.


Meanwhile, according to data from the Korea Securities Depository, as of June 30, approximately 7 million shares of unclaimed stocks held by individual shareholders are stored at the Depository, with a market value of 4.6 billion won. Unclaimed stocks are those whose shareholders are unaware of their existence or find it inconvenient to claim them. The Depository is currently conducting a campaign to find unclaimed stocks until next month in cooperation with KB Kookmin Bank and Hana Bank, which are agencies handling name transfers.
