Incheon City is set to actively pursue the relocation project of the Gyulhyeon Station ammunition depot. On the 26th, the city announced that it will commence a feasibility study for the military facility relocation early next month to prepare a plan for moving the ammunition depot in front of Gyulhyeon Station in Gyeyang-gu.
This is the first step in promoting the relocation project of the Gyulhyeon-dong ammunition depot, following up on the plan to relocate and redeploy major military units in the Incheon area, which Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok officially proposed to the Minister of National Defense in December last year.
The study will be conducted over one and a half years and will include identifying candidate sites for the ammunition depot relocation, planning an underground ammunition depot as a replacement facility, and reviewing the feasibility of developing the existing ammunition depot site into a station area.
The Gyulhyeon-dong ammunition depot was originally located on the outskirts of the city when it was established in the 1970s. However, with the construction of Incheon Subway Line 1, the Gyeongin Ara Waterway, and the development of the 3rd new town, Gyeyang Technovalley, the city has gradually expanded, and the depot is now situated in the middle of the urban area.
Residents near the ammunition depot have raised concerns about safety and restrictions on surrounding land use, demanding the relocation of the depot for over ten years. However, due to difficulties in securing an alternative site, the issue has remained a local concern.
An official from Incheon City stated, "This study is the first step toward relocating the Gyulhyeon-dong ammunition depot, a long-standing wish of Gyeyang-gu residents," and added, "We will also form a consultative body with the Ministry of National Defense and Gyeyang-gu to establish a win-win cooperation plan."
