Samsung Electronics Collaborates with Japan's KDDI on 5G Network Slicing Technology

Samsung Electronics announced on the 26th that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Japanese mobile carrier KDDI to advance 5G network slicing technology.

'Network slicing' is a technology that divides a single physical mobile network into multiple independent virtual networks, enabling customized communication services tailored to various needs simultaneously, such as ultra-low latency required for autonomous driving or ultra-high speed needed for high-definition live sports broadcasts.

The two companies demonstrated the world's first 5G network slicing technology in 2020, and earlier this year successfully verified the network slicing technology using a RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) in a 5G standalone commercial network environment in downtown Tokyo, Japan.

Through this MOU, the two companies plan to continuously strengthen their cooperation to discover new 5G business models and various commercial services utilizing network slicing technology.

Network slicing is a key technology that can promote the expansion of various services in future 5G and next-generation communication networks. The market size is expected to grow at an average annual rate of about 50% from 2023 to 2030.

Toshikazu Yokai, Deputy General Manager and CNO of KDDI’s Technology Headquarters, said, "KDDI has continuously succeeded in verifying commercial network slicing technology and introducing new services, leading global innovation together with Samsung Electronics," adding, "The two companies will continue to strive to realize the potential of 5G, which drives the development of various industries."

Junhee Lee, Vice President and Head of Strategy Marketing Team at Samsung Electronics’ Network Business Division, said, "This MOU is a meaningful advancement to create various synergies by combining the future visions and advanced technologies of both companies," and added, "Samsung Electronics will continue to innovate mobile networks based on its leadership in next-generation communication technologies."
