The Reading Society Cultural Foundation announced on the 26th that it is recruiting regional organizers for the pilot project "2023 Book Friends Visiting by Phone," which reads books over the phone to the elderly and disabled. This project aims to guarantee the "right to read" (reading rights) for the elderly and disabled who are marginalized from reading, providing 15 million KRW each to related organizations, institutions, and social enterprises. The purpose is to form a social safety net by reading books over the phone while also checking on their well-being.

The project organizers will recruit one place in each of the five regions (Seoul/Gyeonggi, Incheon/Gangwon, Chungcheong/Jeolla, Jeju/Gyeongsang). The regional organizers will recruit beneficiaries and reading activists according to the characteristics of each region and operate the phone book reading project. The application deadline is October 10.

A foundation representative stated, "One-on-one phone book reading will be a great opportunity for the elderly and disabled, who have had difficulty participating in existing reading programs, to experience books," emphasizing, "Since reading rights are fundamental rights, everyone should be guaranteed the right to read and enjoy books."
