"Bought 100 at a time" Burger King 40% Massive Discount, Early End Due to Stockpiling

Whopper Set 40% Discount Attracts Bulk Buyers
After Event Ends, Resale Market Booms with Premium Prices

Burger King, a hamburger franchise, held a promotion offering a 40% discount on some products ahead of Chuseok. However, a so-called 'hoarding' phenomenon emerged as people tried to buy large quantities of gifticons at the low price, leading to the early termination of the event.

On the 25th, Burger King ran a promotion through 'KakaoTalk Gift' selling Whopper sets at a discounted price. The original price of the Whopper set was 9,100 won, but during the event, it was sold at a 40% discounted price of 5,400 won.

As a result, consumers flocked to purchase gifticons at the low price. Especially since the gifticons had a validity period of over one year, many bought them in bulk in advance. Some consumers even posted proof shots on online communities showing they had purchased more than 100 units.

Burger King recognized this hoarding behavior and belatedly limited the sales quantity to 5 per person. However, since many bulk buyers had already purchased large quantities, the prepared stock was sold out, and the event ended early.

Immediately after the event ended, several posts appeared on secondhand trading sites and applications selling Whopper set gifticons. Sellers generally resold the gifticons for 6,000 won, receiving a premium. Occasionally, posts appeared offering to sell them for 6,400 won or 7,000 won, which is more than 1,000 won above the discounted price.

Netizens responded with comments such as, "If you make 600 won per unit, selling 100 units still earns 60,000 won, so why resell this?" and "I only bought as much as I would eat, but people are too much."
