The period during which subway fares can be refunded due to train delays will be extended from 7 days to 14 days.
Seoul Metro announced on the 26th that starting from the 7th of next month, if passengers receive a 'Subway Non-Boarding Confirmation' due to train service suspensions or delays, they can claim a fare refund within 14 days.
Fare refunds for train delays can be claimed when train operations are delayed or suspended due to accidents or malfunctions, making the service unavailable. If there is insufficient cash on hand at the station or if many passengers cause congestion, a 'Non-Boarding Confirmation' will be issued, allowing passengers to claim a fare refund later.
From last year until August of this year, a total of 2,552 Non-Boarding Confirmations were issued due to train delays. The total refund amount reached 3,441,000 KRW. Among these, 1,501 cases of fare refunds were related to protests by the National Solidarity for the Elimination of Disability Discrimination (Jeonjangyeon), accounting for 58.8% of the total. The refund amount for these cases was recorded at 2,034,000 KRW.
Four organizations, including Seoul Metro, Korea Railroad Corporation, Incheon Transit Corporation, and Seoul Metro Line 9, plan to simultaneously extend the refund period for delayed fares in line with the subway fare increase scheduled for the 7th of next month.
Baek Ho, President of Seoul Metro, said, "If the subway is delayed due to protests such as those by Jeonjangyeon, passengers can receive fare refunds at nearby stations of related organizations within 14 days. We will not only strongly respond to illegal acts such as train operation disruptions but also do our best to ensure that passengers can use the subway safely and conveniently."
