Police and Civilians Patrol Women’s Safe Return Paths and Nearby Alleys for Resident Safety
Considering Additional Designation of Women’s Safe Return Paths in Dense Areas like One-Room and Multi-Family Housing
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, “We Will Create ‘365 Days Safe Mapo’ Through Various Systems”
Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Gang-su) announced on the 25th that it conducted a ‘Mapo-gu Safe Return Home Route Joint Patrol by Civil, Public, and Police’ to create a safe walking environment.
In order to protect not only women but all residents from indiscriminate violent crimes that have recently occurred consecutively, Mapo-gu, Mapo Police Station (Chief Im Seong-sun), the Neighborhood Watch (Captain Lee Jae-gyeong), and the Child and Women Safety Regional Coalition joined forces.
According to last year’s Seoul city statistics, the female population ratio in Mapo-gu is 53%, the highest among the city’s autonomous districts, and the number of single female households ranks fifth.
Accordingly, since September, Mapo-gu has been jointly patrolling women’s safe return home routes throughout the area with civil, public, and police cooperation. This patrol was conducted along the women’s safe return home route from 104 World Cup Buk-ro to 52 World Cup Buk-ro 16-gil.
Participants in the patrol carefully checked the operation of safety facilities such as CCTV, security lights, and emergency bells along the return home routes and reviewed residents’ inconvenience issues to enhance safety.
Also, as interest in safe alleyway walking increased, Mapo-gu patrolled Moraenae-ro 5-gil in Seongsan-dong, where many multi-family houses are located, to review the installation of CCTV and smart security lights and discuss the additional designation of women’s safe return home routes.
An official from the district said, “We plan to continue patrolling so that residents can safely walk the streets late at night,” and added, “We will actively discover and operate safe return home routes for the safety of women and residents.”
Mapo-gu selects and designates women’s safe return home routes in areas densely populated with one-room and multi-family houses and areas with frequent 112 emergency calls, installing safety facilities such as CCTV, security lights, and emergency bells. Currently, 10 routes are managed and operated together with Mapo Police Station, making every effort to create a safe return home environment.
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “We are deeply concerned about establishing safety measures for residents due to the ongoing serious crimes,” and added, “Mapo-gu will do its best to create a ‘365-day Safe Mapo’ where anyone can feel secure through not only the women’s safe return home route system but also the ‘Safe Mapo Hotline’ linked with related organizations such as the police and the ‘Mapo-gu Disaster Safety Situation Room’ operating 24 hours a day.”
