60s Male Fined 700,000 Won for Assault
Court: "No Reason for Assault Accompanying Reprimand"
A man in his 60s who assaulted a high school student wearing a school uniform by reprimanding him for smoking and then striking the back of his head was sentenced to a fine.
The Daejeon District Court Criminal Division 2 (Judge Yoon Ji-sook) recently announced on the 24th that it sentenced Mr. A (62), who was indicted on assault charges, to a fine of 700,000 won.

Mr. A is accused of hitting the faces and the back of the heads of Mr. B (18) and Mr. C (17), who were smoking cigarettes while wearing school uniforms, as he passed by a convenience store in Seongnam-dong, Dong-gu, Daejeon, on a bicycle around 8:20 a.m. on March 24.
During the trial, Mr. A explained his assault charge by saying it was "for the purpose of reprimanding them for smoking despite being minors," and claimed "the students also kicked over my bicycle," asserting mutual assault. However, the court did not accept this claim.
The court stated, "There is no reason under social norms to accompany reprimanding with assault," and explained the sentencing by saying, "While it is acknowledged that the victims overturned Mr. A's bicycle and clenched their fists in response to the assault, it did not actually lead to further violence."
