Growing Influence of Economically Empowered 'Active Seniors'
Increase in Active Pursuits Like Exercise and Overseas Travel
Among apartment residents aged 60 and over, one in two considers their own life more important than their children or grandchildren.
This reflects a societal change as Korea enters a super-aged society, with an increasing number of so-called “Active Seniors” who engage in active social activities.
Focus Media Korea, an elevator TV operator, and Korea Gallup released survey results containing this information on the 22nd. The survey was conducted from April to May among 229 residents aged 60 or older living in apartment complexes, mixed-use buildings, and officetels equipped with elevator TVs.
The survey found that 47% of respondents said “my life is more important than my children or grandchildren.” Additionally, 52% answered that they “live younger than their actual age,” and more than half, 58%, said they “have plans to travel abroad within a year.”

The most common exercise done in the past year was hiking at 45%. Golf (15%) was the second most popular, followed by swimming (12%), yoga (11%), and walking (7%).
These active seniors also showed familiarity with digital and mobile platforms. 62% responded that they “order food through delivery platforms,” far exceeding half, and 73% said they “frequently watch YouTube.”
Regarding economic activity plans after retirement, 36% chose pensions or financial income as the most common option. Starting a company or self-employment (31%), reemployment (20%), and part-time jobs (10%) followed.
Meanwhile, according to data released by BC Card’s Data Business Division on the 17th, the number of customers aged 60 and over and their share of payment amounts have rapidly increased over the past five years before and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
As of January to August this year, the travel sector showed the highest growth rate in payment amounts among customers aged 60 and over. It is analyzed that senior customers, who have more free time and purchasing power after retirement, have actively started traveling abroad as the COVID-19 pandemic subsides.
An industry official stated, “As our society ages, economic influence is increasing,” and predicted, “Consumption by the elderly population with purchasing power will continue to grow.”
