Song Gap-seok, a non-Lee Jae-myung faction (non-Myung faction) member of the Democratic Party of Korea, resigned from his appointed Supreme Council member position on the 23rd. This came amid extreme clashes between the pro-Lee Jae-myung (pro-Myung) faction and the non-Myung faction following the passage of the arrest motion against Lee Jae-myung.
Spokesperson Kang Seon-woo sent a notice to reporters in the afternoon, stating, "Supreme Council member Song expressed his intention to resign from the appointed Supreme Council member position to Representative Lee Jae-myung yesterday, and after careful consideration, the representative accepted his resignation today."
During the party reshuffle in March, Representative Lee appointed Song as an appointed Supreme Council member as a kind of 'conciliation measure' to ease factional conflicts. Song, whose constituency is Gwangju Seo-gu Gap-eul, had previously voiced criticism toward Representative Lee through activities such as the non-Myung faction meeting 'The Path of the Democratic Party.'
Song's decision to resign is interpreted as a result of feeling pressured after the pro-Myung-led party leadership vowed to "hold the non-Myung faction accountable" following the passage of the arrest motion on the 21st, and amid mounting demands for his resignation from hardline party members. Song also did not appear at the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly the previous day.
