Incheon Civic Group Demands Immediate Halt to Unfair Northern Region Comprehensive Development Plan

Incheon City is facing conflicts with residents over issues such as donation and acceptance related to the ‘Northern Area Comprehensive Development Plan’ being promoted in the Seo-gu district.

On the 21st, about 40 people including members of the Geomdan Citizens' Union (Seo-gu Residents' Environmental Federation, Geomam Resort City Federation, Wondang District Federation), which is composed of resident organizations from Seo-gu, held a press conference in front of the main gate of Incheon City Hall, urging the suspension of the establishment of the Northern Area Comprehensive Development Plan.

The Northern Area Comprehensive Development Plan was established with the aim of developing the northern area of the Gyeongin Ara Waterway, including Geomdan, Majon, and Daegok, into a hub area of the northwestern metropolitan area and a center for fostering new industries in the north-south direction.

However, the original residents are opposing the plan, stating that the residential environment improvement in the northern area is further delayed due to public contribution standards that do not reflect reality and stricter criteria compared to other regions.

Through a statement from the Geomdan Citizens' Union on this day, they claimed, “The establishment of the Northern Area Comprehensive Development Plan, which blocks resident-led development, must be immediately stopped,” and added, “The unfounded public contribution standards and flawed policies are rather hindering the balanced development of Seo-gu.”

They further urged, “The city should promptly promote balanced development for the balanced growth of Seo-gu, which is about to be subdivided, rather than development concentrated in new towns, and quickly establish prevention measures to improve the residential environment for Seo-gu residents who have suffered from various noises, fumes, and pollution.”
