Gyeonggi Province will begin weekend overweight vehicle enforcement on roads in the northern Gyeonggi area starting from the 23rd of this month.
The Gyeonggi Provincial Construction Headquarters announced on the 21st that from the 23rd, overweight vehicle enforcement will be conducted not only on weekdays but also on weekends across all 59 routes managed by Gyeonggi Province, including local roads and delegated national highways.
Since March 2020, due to COVID-19, Gyeonggi Province had temporarily suspended weekend enforcement and only conducted weekday enforcement. However, weekend enforcement resumed on southern area routes starting this March. From the 23rd of this month, weekend enforcement will also resume on northern area routes.
The enforcement targets vehicles exceeding a total weight of 44 tons, axle load of 11 tons, width of 2.5 meters, height of 4.0 meters, or length of 16.7 meters. Gyeonggi Province plans to impose increased fines based on the number of violations within the past year.
Currently, Gyeonggi Province operates five mobile enforcement teams continuously, focusing enforcement around sources of overweight vehicles. Additionally, they are conducting preventive activities to eradicate overweight vehicles by distributing cooperation letters and promotional materials to about 150 companies causing overweight issues and to freight vehicle transport business associations.
A representative from the Gyeonggi Provincial Construction Headquarters stated, "Overweight vehicles can cause road damage and increased braking distances, which may lead to major accidents involving casualties. To eradicate overweight practices by freight vehicles, we will conduct year-round enforcement and actively promote lawful driving to drivers, companies causing overweight, and related workers."
