SKT and Korea Railroad Research Institute Develop Next-Generation Railway Communication 'Eum 5G-R'

Establishment and Demonstration of Ieum 5G-R Communication Test Network over Four Years until 2026

SKT and Korea Railroad Research Institute Develop Next-Generation Railway Communication 'Eum 5G-R'

On the 20th, SK Telecom announced that it will collaborate with the Korea Railroad Research Institute to establish and demonstrate a test network for the next-generation railway communication system, Ieum 5G-R.

Ieum 5G-R is a 5G-based railway communication network technology that enables 5G data communication even on trains traveling at speeds exceeding 350 km/h. This test network will utilize Ieum 5G operating in the 4.7 GHz frequency band. Currently, LTE-R, which uses the LTE network, is applied to domestic railways.

The Korea Railroad Research Institute plans to carry out the project titled "Development of Core Technologies for Ieum 5G-R for Railway Digital Transformation" over four years from this year until 2026.

During this period, the project will include building the Ieum 5G-R test network based on 5G SA, coverage extension technology, network slicing technology, railway-specialized services, and QoS demonstration.

SKT has formed a consortium with Contela and SK O&S and won the first-year contract for this project, participating in the development of Ieum 5G-R.

The first-year contract won by SKT, Contela, and SK O&S involves designing the structure of the Ieum 5G-R network (test network) to be built at the Osong Comprehensive Railway Test Line, cell planning, and producing core prototypes.

In the second year, the completion of the wireless network base station construction is planned, and in the third and fourth years, tasks include 5G-based railway services, railway system functions, and interoperability testing and demonstration with LTE-R services.

Jung Chang-kwon, Vice President in charge of SKT Infrastructure Business, stated, "Through this project, we will actively collaborate with Contela and SK O&S to achieve meaningful research results in the field of railway 5G wireless communication technology."
