Dobong-gu, Smart City Living Lab 'Smooth Sailing'... Taking Off as a 'Smart City'

Dobong-gu (Mayor Oh Eon-seok) is stepping up as a smart city that residents can truly experience. As a starting point for this, the district has been operating a Smart City Living Lab since March.

Regarding the operation of the Living Lab, Oh Eon-seok, Mayor of Dobong-gu, stated, “We aim to solve urban problems proposed directly by residents using convergent and complex technologies,” adding, “We will address local issues in Dobong-gu through a successful demonstration model of resident-participation smart projects.”

The Dobong-gu Smart City Living Lab, meaning a laboratory in everyday life, is an on-site experimental space where various social problems are addressed by turning residents’ daily living environments into laboratories. Residents propose ideas and conduct demonstrations to achieve innovation.

Since March, the district recruited a total of 50 residents to participate in the Smart City Living Lab and operated it over four sessions covering ▲identification of local problems ▲development of urban problem-solving measures ▲consultation on service application plans to derive demonstration services for Dobong-gu ▲and planning of demonstration services.

During the Living Lab activities, the resident participation group identified local issues related to themes such as transportation, safety, environment, welfare, and tourism. They explored solutions using smart technologies through design thinking and brainstorming, including a smart surveillance service to prevent illegal dumping, a multi-purpose smart pole for crime prevention and convenience, and an electric vehicle charging station safety service to prevent fires.

As a result, considering policy direction, public interest, and feasibility of service implementation, a candidate service group was selected. After reviewing smart demonstration services and opinions from Dobong-gu departments, the electric vehicle charging station safety service was finally chosen as the demonstration project.

The electric vehicle charging station safety service aims to prevent major accidents by installing AI-based wireless thermal imaging cameras around electric vehicle chargers to monitor fires and detect intrusions. Since September, the safety system has been installed and is being pilot-operated at Dobong-gu Office’s electric vehicle charging stations. Based on the analysis and reflection of the pilot operation results, the system will be expanded throughout Dobong-gu.

Meanwhile, on the 18th, the district held the ‘2023 Dobong-gu Smart City Living Lab Performance Sharing Meeting’ at the Songseokdae Auditorium in Dobong Forest Village. About 40 people, including the Smart City Living Lab resident participation group and contractors, attended. The event featured a video demonstration of Living Lab activities, presentation of appreciation certificates to residents, progress reports from sessions 1 to 4, and reports on the Living Lab demonstration project establishment.

Mayor Oh Eon-seok of Dobong-gu said, “The various opinions presented through the Living Lab will be actively reflected in district policies,” and added, “To make Dobong-gu a safe and happy smart city for residents, we will establish a dedicated smart city department to create a systematic foundation and policies.”

Since the launch of the 8th local government, Dobong-gu has been actively working to realize a data-driven smart city. A public data center is being built for integrated urban control incorporating new technologies, and efforts are underway to attract external funding through smart city-related contests.

To realize scientific administration through big data, the district plans an impact analysis project integrating data from various projects promoted by departments. Additionally, to support district administration using the latest 4th Industrial Revolution technologies, the district is pushing for the establishment of an ordinance for ‘Dobong-gu Scientific Administration and Smart City Realization.’
