Special Event Held for Reenactment of Hosangnori at Bawijeol Village, Gangdong-gu

Reenactment of 'Bawijeol Village Hosang Play' for Overseas Guests at Amsadong Site on September 26

Special Event Held for Reenactment of Hosangnori at Bawijeol Village, Gangdong-gu

Kangdong-gu (District Mayor Lee Soo-hee) announced that on the 26th at 10 a.m., a special reenactment event of the Bawijeol Village Hosangnori (Seoul City Intangible Cultural Property No. 10) will be held at the Amsa-dong archaeological site in Seoul for about 120 mayors and corporate representatives from cities around the world attending the 6th World Smart Cities Organization (WeGO) General Assembly, as well as 500 local residents.

The event will be organized by the Bawijeol Village Hosangnori Preservation Society (Chairman Park Seong-jik), with about 150 preservation members participating to reenact the entire Hosangnori process over 60 minutes.

The reenactment will proceed in the following order: ▲ Balinje (funeral rite) ▲ Jojangnori (leader play) ▲ Chulsang (departure) ▲ Crossing the single-log bridge, rice field ridges, and stepping stones ▲ Noje (funeral rite) ▲ Crossing the rice field ridges, stepping stones, and single-log bridge again ▲ Dalgujil (carrying the bier), and Pyeongtoje (flat land rite).

The Seoul City Intangible Cultural Property, "Bawijeol Village Hosangnori," is a funeral play performed when a long-lived and blessed person departs, where pallbearers carrying the bier and lead singers exchange dirges in rhythm to ensure a safe journey through a difficult path. Unlike typical funerals, the bier appears to move forward as if being pushed backward, creating a lively scene resembling rippling water. The district has been showcasing Hosangnori annually at the Prehistoric Culture Festival held every October in cooperation with the Bawijeol Village Hosangnori Preservation Society to preserve traditional culture.

About 120 mayors from member cities and representatives of partner companies visiting for the 6th World Smart Cities Organization (WeGO) General Assembly will participate in this special reenactment event as part of a tour to experience Korean culture and smart city technology. The World Smart Cities Organization (WeGO) is the largest international city council established for cooperation and exchange in the smart city sector.

Through this reenactment event, it is expected to provide overseas city and corporate officials with a special experience of Korean culture and promote Kangdong-gu and its traditional culture to the world.

District Mayor Lee Soo-hee said, "Bawijeol Village Hosangnori is a precious traditional culture preserved and passed down in the Amsa-dong area of Kangdong-gu. I hope it will be a special experience for the dignitaries from cities around the world who have come to Kangdong-gu to experience Korea’s traditional culture, and we will make further efforts to ensure that this valuable traditional heritage is systematically preserved."
