[2023 Asia Construction Awards] Building K-Construction Masterpieces

"Significantly Improved Quality of Housing"
DK Asia, Hyundai Construction, and POSCO E&C Receive Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Minister's Award

At the 18th Asia Construction Comprehensive Awards held this year, the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award was bestowed upon DK Asia, Hyundai Engineering & Construction, and POSCO E&C. DL E&C and SK Ecoplant received the Seoul Metropolitan Mayor’s Award, while Daewoo E&C and Hyundai Engineering were honored with the Overseas Construction Association President’s Award. Eight construction companies, including GH Gyeonggi Housing & Urban Corporation, GS Engineering & Construction, HDC Hyundai Development Company, Kumho Construction, Hanwha Engineering & Construction, Doosan Engineering & Construction, Booyoung Housing, and Ssangyong Engineering & Construction, were selected for the Asia Economy Awards in various categories.

On the 21st, Asia Economy held the 2023 18th Asia Construction Comprehensive Awards ceremony at the Korea Press Center, selecting and announcing the distinguished winners who have shone in the construction industry this year. Although it was a meaningful celebratory event, the atmosphere was somewhat solemn. This was due to the overall challenging environment in the construction industry caused by rising material costs continuing since last year, increased construction expenses, tightening financial markets, and a downturn in the construction economy. The aftermath of various incidents and accidents surrounding the construction industry, which had recently been controversial, also weighed heavily on the attendees’ spirits.

However, through this event, construction industry stakeholders agreed to correct and reform past corrupt practices and improper customs, even if it would be difficult. There was also a consensus that, for the survival of the construction industry in crisis, not only short-term remedies but also large-scale innovation through mid- to long-term strategic planning is necessary.

Reflecting this industry atmosphere, this year’s comprehensive awards highly valued achievements that stayed true to the essence of construction while improving the quality of housing for the public, awarding additional points in the selection of winning companies.

First, DK Asia, which received the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award in the Smart Housing category, was highly praised for introducing the concept of an urban brand for the first time in Korea and presenting the urban brand “Royal Park City,” a high-end resort city concept, leading a paradigm shift in the Korean housing industry.

Hyundai Engineering & Construction received the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award in the Brand category for launching apartment brands such as Hillstate and The H, contributing to improving the public’s residential environment and enhancing quality of life.

POSCO E&C, awarded the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award in the Design category, received high marks for the specialized apartment exterior design showcased in “The Sharp Gwangju Forest.” Notably, the application of a frame wrapping around the apartment buildings to provide a three-dimensional effect and the use of a gray-tone urban cast color on the exterior walls stood out.

DL E&C won the Seoul Mayor’s Award in the Quality Innovation category. The selection was based on the “C2 House,” a lifestyle-customized residential platform designed with a variable structure and optimal residential flow. SK Ecoplant took the Seoul Mayor’s Award in the Social Contribution category, recognized for various social contribution activities, including employees personally volunteering as learning assistants for children at local childcare centers.

The Overseas Construction Association President’s Award was given to Daewoo E&C and Hyundai Engineering. Daewoo E&C was highly evaluated for its role as the main contractor in the LNG liquefaction plant project “NLNG Train 7” on Bonny Island, Nigeria. Hyundai Engineering was praised for entering the European market through the Poland “Police PDH/PP Plant Project.”

Additionally, eight construction companies?GH Gyeonggi Housing & Urban Corporation (new technology and construction methods), GS Engineering & Construction (social contribution), HDC Hyundai Development Company, Kumho Construction, Hanwha Engineering & Construction (eco-friendly housing), Doosan Engineering & Construction (brand), Booyoung Housing (housing stability), and Ssangyong Engineering & Construction (remodeling)?received Asia Economy Representative Awards in their respective categories.

The Asia Construction Comprehensive Awards, hosted by Asia Economy, were supported by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Seoul Metropolitan Government, Korea Construction Association, Overseas Construction Association, Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements, Korea Institute of Construction Industry and Economy, and Korea Real Estate Development Association.
