Japanese YouTuber 'Yuippyoung' Active in Korea Sparks Controversy
Passerby Asks Origin, Then Says "Get Out of Korean Land" with Abusive Language
"Apologizing as a Japanese"...Netizens Respond "We Are Sorry"
A video showing a North Korean defector in South Korea verbally abusing a Japanese YouTuber with anti-Japanese sentiments has sparked controversy.
On the 17th, a video titled "A Japanese person who gave up everything in Japan and came to Korea to headbutt the bare ground" was posted on the YouTube channel ‘YUIPYON’. The YouTuber, who has 610,000 subscribers, is named Kiwano Yuiro, a Japanese woman who does personal broadcasting in Korea.
The video shows Yui talking with a passerby on the street. A middle-aged man walking by first asks, "Where are you from?" When Yui replies, "I’m from Japan," the man reveals, "I’m from North Korea but defected to South Korea."
After learning that she is Japanese, the man's attitude suddenly changes. He asks, "Aren’t North and South Koreans the same people? Do you know which country I hate the most?" Yui awkwardly smiles and answers, "Japan."
Then the man responds, "That’s right," and suddenly starts spewing abusive language, saying, "I want to kill all Japanese people," and "I want to chew them all up." Even when Yui says, "Still, we like Korea, so we came here," the man continues with verbal abuse, saying, "You shouldn’t say that to Koreans. I’ll smash you with a stone."
Yui’s group tried to calm the situation by saying, "Okay," but the man did not stop criticizing, saying, "(Korea) was held captive by Japan for 31 years." Yui retorted, "I know that, but your words are too harsh."
However, the man said, "It’s not just harsh words, it’s resentment. I hate Japan the most. I call Japanese people derogatory names," and added, "My grandfather died because of the Japanese. As his grandson, I have deep resentment."
Eventually, Yui burst into tears and apologized, saying, "I’m truly sorry as a Japanese person." Until the end, the man shouted insults such as "Dokdo is Korean territory," "Get off Korean land," and "Never come to Korean land again."
After the man left, Yui’s group lamented, "I’m also Japanese, so I can’t stop him," and Yui, unable to stop crying, said, "But what he said is true." The video also showed them trying to forget the incident the next day.
The video has not even been up for two days but had surpassed 210,000 views as of 8 a.m. on the 19th, causing a stir.
The comment section was filled with messages of comfort and apologies toward Yui. Comments included, "I’m sorry as a fellow Korean," "Not all Koreans are like that," and "My heart hurt, I cried with you, and I was ashamed as a Korean."
One netizen wrote, "Koreans do not hate Japan. We always welcome them as neighbors. Don’t be hurt by losers." Another commented, "The resentment against Japanese colonial rule is a deep wound for us, but not everyone hates Japan," offering comfort.
