On the 29th, Jung Kyung-hwa will take the stage at Geoam Art Hall in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, performing works by various composers such as Brahms, Grieg, and Franck in collaboration with pianist Kim Tae-hyung.
Jung Kyung-hwa is a first-generation Korean violinist who made her name known in the global classical music scene. The legendary anecdote that "her parents carried a piano with them when they fled during the Korean War" became the driving force behind the eventual formation of the Jung Trio (Jung Myung-hwa, Jung Kyung-hwa, Jung Myung-hoon).
Earlier on the 5th, she appeared before the audience as part of a piano trio with Chinese cellist Jian Wang, replacing retired cellist Jung Myung-hwa. On that day’s stage, the siblings Jung Kyung-hwa and Jung Myung-hoon performed a duo, marking their first collaboration since the memorial concert honoring their mother Lee Won-sook in December 2011.
At the age of 13, Jung Kyung-hwa entered the Juilliard School in the United States as a full scholarship student, studying under Ivan Galamian and receiving guidance from Joseph Gingold and Paul Kantor. After winning the Leventritt Competition in 1967, she began to build her international reputation. She made her European debut in 1970 with a collaboration with the London Symphony Orchestra.
From 1970 to 1988, she was an exclusive artist for Decca, and from 1988 for EMI (Warner Classics). Over the past 50 years, she has left legendary recordings through world-renowned labels such as Decca, RCA, Deutsche Grammophon, and EMI.
After winning competitions, she received the first Nanpa Music Award, and following her European debut, she was awarded the Moran Medal of the Order of Civil Merit by the Republic of Korea. In 2017, she was inducted into the Gramophone Hall of Fame in the violin category alongside artists such as Fritz Kreisler, St?phane Grappelli, and Isaac Stern.
She served as the artistic director of the Daegwallyeong International Music Festival for seven years starting in 2011. She is currently a tenured professor at her alma mater, the Juilliard School.
