The urban forest created at the Ansan Sihwa landfill site in Gyeonggi Province received an award from the Korea Forest Service.
Gyeonggi Province announced on the 18th that the fine dust blocking forest established by the province at the former Ansan Sihwa landfill site was selected as "excellent" in the "2023 Carbon Neutral Urban Forest Management Survey" conducted by the Korea Forest Service.
The fine dust blocking forest is a forest created and managed around areas where fine dust is generated, using plants to block the spread of fine dust and minimize air flow.
This Korea Forest Service evaluation scored 209 fine dust blocking forests nationwide based on criteria such as appropriate planting density, planting volume, recommended species planting, growth and management status, and support tree management. After the evaluation, 20 sites nationwide, including the urban forest within the Ansan Sihwa landfill, were selected.
Earlier, to reduce fine dust and provide a pleasant urban living environment, Gyeonggi Province invested a total of 10 billion KRW over three years from 2021, including 5 billion KRW in national funds and 5 billion KRW in provincial funds, to plant 5,800 trees such as firs and 172,900 shrubs such as Euonymus at the Ansan Sihwa landfill in Bono-dong, Sangnok-gu, Ansan City, where post-management had ended, creating a 10-hectare fine dust blocking forest.
A Gyeonggi Province official stated, "The fine dust blocking forest created at the former Ansan Sihwa landfill is expected to become a large-scale carbon sink representing Gyeonggi Province in connection with the creation of a provincial garden, as well as a forest garden that reduces fine dust and supplies fresh air."
