Starting from the 18th, the centrally renovated corridor, Forest Lounge, and Lawn Yard will open first
The park center has been revamped with a 52.8m corridor, lawn plaza, and surrounding dense forest
Full opening scheduled for November including Omokhan Art Museum, Seoul-style Kids Cafe, and basketball court
Yangcheon-gu (Mayor Lee Gi-jae) announced that it will temporarily open the central corridor and northeastern forest lounge sections, which are the first phase of the renovation work at Omok Park (21,470㎡) located in the heart of Mokdong, starting from the 18th.
The spaces to be opened first include the central lawn and the surrounding corridor and forest lounge, accounting for about 43% of the entire park area.
The 'Corridor,' the central space of Omok Park, is an elevated walkway with a square structure measuring 52.8m by 52.8m and a height of 3.7m. Underneath the corridor is a shelter that protects visitors from sun and rain, while the corridor above serves as a key facility offering panoramic views of the entire park forest. The district has created three small cultural spaces under the corridor featuring plants, books, and paintings, and placed 57 movable benches and 15 tables in the remaining area for anyone to freely stay and relax.
At the 'Painting Shelter' under the corridor, a commemorative exhibition titled 'Revisiting Urban Green Spaces' by artist Lee Chae-won will be held until the end of October. The 'Plant Shelter' operates a companion plant clinic twice a week (every Tuesday and Friday from 1 PM to 6 PM). The 'Book Shelter' offers books related to plants, forests, and gardens, allowing visitors to experience a public garden with the scent of books in the city.
The 'Central Lawn,' enclosed by the corridor, is an open space boasting versatile uses such as garden festivals, outdoor concerts, picnics, and events. It is also expected to contribute to flood prevention by serving as a temporary retention basin during heavy rains.
Additionally, the district has created a multi-layered green 'Forest Lounge' on the vacant land in the northeast of the park by planting tall trees, small trees, and herbaceous plants. Three wooden deck shelters have been installed in the forest area, with 20 tables and 63 benches arranged to provide a resting space for all park visitors.
Meanwhile, Omok Park was designed by design studio LOCI (CEO Park Seung-jin) through a public competition. Notably, landscape architect Park Seung-jin, who led the design, is a highly renowned expert who was responsible for the landscaping of the Yongsan Amorepacific new headquarters designed by David Chipperfield, the winner of this year’s Pritzker Prize. The district began construction last October and carried out section works. The remaining second phase will include the Omok Han Art Museum, Seoul-style kids cafe, basketball court, children's forest shelter, and health lounge, with plans to fully open in November.
Lee Gi-jae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, said, “We proudly present the newly reborn Omok Park as a sophisticated complex cultural space where residents can enjoy leisure, art, and ecological activities after enduring long-term inconveniences while waiting for its opening. Since Omok Park is located in the center of the Mokdong commercial district, we hope it will become a new healing spot, and we will do our best to open the remaining parts of the park as soon as possible.”
