Dojo, regarded as Tesla's new source of revenue, is a supercomputer that creates autonomous driving software based on driving data from Tesla electric vehicles. It is being developed with the aim of enhancing the completeness of autonomous driving by analyzing the vast amount of road traffic data collected from over one million Tesla electric vehicles worldwide through neural network processing.
Dojo was first mentioned at Tesla's AI Day held in 2021, when it was still in the early stages of development. Later, at the 2022 AI Day, Tesla shared how the machine learning-specific chip ‘D1’ that makes up the Dojo computer operates and how hundreds of computer chips are connected, revealing some progress in development. According to Tesla's announcement at the time, the D1 chip is produced using an ultra-fine 7nm process and has computational power four times faster than similar chips from other companies. It is also known to have about 1.3 times higher power efficiency than existing chips.
According to Tesla's plan, four Dojo units can deliver the performance equivalent to 4,000 graphics processing units (GPUs). Tesla claims to have secured 482 million kilometers worth of driving video data through customers' use of Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) beta. Tesla's goal is to train these driving videos through Dojo to achieve Level 5 full autonomous driving.
Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, also revealed during a conference call last July that the company plans to invest more than $1 billion in Dojo by the end of 2024. Tesla is confident that by around October next year, Dojo will achieve a computing power of 100 exaFLOPS (10 quintillion operations per second), making it the world's most powerful supercomputer.
Meanwhile, on the 11th (local time), the Morgan Stanley team led by analyst Adam Jonas, regarded as a leading Wall Street Tesla analyst, raised Tesla's target stock price by 60%, from $250 to $400. Their rationale was that Tesla's supercomputer Dojo will pioneer a new market far exceeding automobile sales. In particular, Morgan Stanley focused on Dojo's scalability. They foresee that Dojo will accelerate the introduction of Tesla's autonomous robo-taxis and create new revenue streams through future sales of autonomous driving-related software and hardware.
