"Creating Security Gaps... Opposition Irresponsible"
Rep. Taeyoungho of the People Power Party criticized the opposition party's announcement on the 12th that they would push for the impeachment of Defense Minister Lee Jong-seop over allegations of interference in the Marine Corps investigation, saying, "If the impeachment motion passes, he will neither be able to be appointed nor dismissed," and added, "Then the head of the military will have his hands and feet tied."
Rep. Tae appeared on KBS Radio's 'Choi Kyung-young's Strongest Current Affairs' that day and said, "This is precisely an attempt to create a security vacuum."
There are expectations that President Yoon Seok-yeol will carry out a cabinet reshuffle including Minister Lee within this week, but the Democratic Party believes that the truth behind the allegations of interference in the investigation of the death of Marine Corporal Chae must be clarified through the impeachment of Minister Lee. Rep. Shin Won-sik of the People Power Party, the secretary of the National Defense Committee in the National Assembly, is being strongly considered as the successor Defense Minister.
Regarding this, Rep. Tae pointed out, "Didn't we see this during the impeachment of Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sang-min? The ministerial position remains vacant until the impeachment motion is dismissed," adding, "Other ministerial posts might be somewhat manageable, but right now, the North and South are divided and in a tense standoff."
He continued, "What will we do if North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladimir Putin meet and produce some outcome?" and criticized, "In such a rapidly evolving situation, invoking an impeachment motion is truly extremely irresponsible."
