Job Postings for Generative AI Increased by 250% Over 2 Years
Company Talent Shortage... Seeking Freelance Experts
AI-Related Searches Like 'Prompt Engineering' on the Rise
AI (Artificial Intelligence) experts are gaining attention in the US freelance employment market. Job postings related to generative AI have surged following the emergence of ChatGPT.
According to Indeed, the world's largest job information search engine, job postings related to generative AI on US hiring platforms increased by 250% from July 2021 to July this year, CNBC and other economic media reported on the 10th (local time).
Additionally, according to the hiring platform LinkedIn, since the introduction of large language models (LLM), which form the basis of generative AI, to the public in November last year, AI-related search volumes such as 'GPT' or 'ChatGPT' among LinkedIn members have increased nearly 21 times.
In April this year, the number of mentions of AI keywords in LinkedIn member posts increased by 25% compared to the previous month, and in June, keywords such as 'prompt engineering' and 'prompt crafting' were added to profiles more than 15 times compared to the beginning of the year.
Since the emergence of generative AI, the employment market has rapidly changed, with some white-collar (office worker) jobs being threatened or replaced, while the demand for the valuable 'AI technical talent' appears to be increasing.
In fact, according to a survey conducted by LinkedIn in June targeting US corporate executives, 44% plan to expand the use of AI technology over the next year, and 47% expect productivity to improve through AI technology.
On the other hand, statistics show that only 2.2% of LinkedIn members classified in the US information technology (IT) and media sectors are proficient in AI. In other industries such as financial services, AI utilization is high, but technical talent is scarce, creating opportunities for freelance experts.
Dr. Karin Kimbrough, LinkedIn’s Chief Economist, explained, "Over the past year, as the world rapidly adopted AI technology, employers are increasingly seeking talent who know how to effectively use new AI technologies to boost productivity."
The AI education market is also growing accordingly. A representative from the AI online learning company Udacity told CNBC, "Among the high-demand courses, interest in AI-based courses such as deep learning, AI programming using Python, AI for trading, and natural language processing has increased by 33% over the past year."
Margaret Rilani, Vice President of Talent at the freelance platform Upwork, said, "AI professionals recognized by companies have a solid foundation in computer science, knowledge of machine learning algorithms, and experience in analysis."
She added, "Successful AI experts typically hold bachelor's or master's degrees in fields such as computer science or engineering. However, to secure a job in the AI field, one must demonstrate the skills, abilities, and expertise to carry out specific projects."
