Ministry of Science and ICT Allocates Frequency to POSCO DX
Providing Autonomous Locomotive Driving and Remote Control Services
The 'Ieum 5G' communication network for system automation and safety management will be introduced at the Gwangyang Steelworks in Jeollanam-do.
On the 11th, the Ministry of Science and ICT announced that it has completed the procedures for allocating Ieum 5G frequencies and registering as a telecommunications service provider to POSCO DX. The usage period is two years.
POSCO DX plans to provide autonomous locomotive driving and remote control services using Ieum 5G.
With this frequency allocation, the number of entities allocated Ieum 5G frequencies has increased to 14. When a telecommunications operator uses frequencies to provide services to companies, visitors, or others, they receive frequency allocation from the government.
At the Gwangyang Steelworks, locomotives have been operated to transport molten iron (hot metal) from the blast furnace to the steelmaking plant manually. POSCO DX plans to contribute to automation of operations and safety management of workers by linking autonomous locomotives and the railway control system based on the Ieum 5G communication network.
By installing LiDAR and multiple cameras on the locomotives to eliminate blind spots during operation and equipping functions such as emergency remote control, it is expected to prevent safety accidents involving workers.
In the future, POSCO DX plans to build a system at the Gwangyang Steelworks that acquires and monitors high-definition video in real time based on Ieum 5G. This will enable services such as remote crane operation, robot patrols, and operation optimization and training through a digital twin of the steelworks.
Choi Woo-hyuk, Director of the Radio Policy Bureau at the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, "It is significant that Ieum 5G is being introduced for the first time in the steel sector, which plays a central role in the domestic industry," adding, "We will actively support Ieum 5G to promote exports and employment and to create more added value in the future."
