5G antenna specialist Hurim Networks, supported by the government, has embarked on the development of high-performance antennas combining 5G and LTE (4G) to expand its global market reach, including the United States and Europe.
Hurim Networks announced on the 11th that it has been selected as the lead research and development institution for the national project titled “Development of 5G 3.5GHz Beamforming (8T8R) Semi-Active Antenna including 2L4H4C Multi-band Sector Antenna,” which is part of the Export-Oriented Small and Medium Enterprise Technology Innovation Development Project conducted by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups in the second half of this year.
The Export-Oriented Export Growth National Project under the Small and Medium Enterprise Technology Innovation Development Project is a government-led support initiative managed by the Small and Medium Business Technology Information Promotion Agency and supported by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups to nurture promising export companies that can lead global technology and market competition.
With this selection, Hurim Networks plans to receive approximately 1.8 billion KRW in funding over the next four years until 2027 to develop enhanced performance “4G·5G multi-antennas.” Since existing 4G and 5G require different antennas due to differing frequencies, the commercialization of multi-antennas is expected to replace them.
To this end, Hurim Networks will actively utilize its proprietary technology and patents to develop ▲high-order multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antennas ▲beamforming antennas ▲inter-band interference cancellation technology ▲time-division multiplexing low-noise amplifier (TDD LNA) modules to improve 5G uplink (UL) ▲and low-loss phase shifters.
A Hurim Networks representative stated, “With the selection for this national project, we will be able to secure core technologies for developing 4G·5G multi-antennas,” adding, “We are particularly focusing on developing the TDD LNA module to improve uplink performance, which will help solve the coverage imbalance issue between uplink and downlink (DL) in existing 3.5GHz 5G.”
Hurim Networks supplies various 4G and 5G antennas worldwide, including North America, under the brand name ‘GammaNu.’ According to the company, while carrying out this national project, it plans to increase the export sales ratio of its antenna division from the current 40% level to 70%.
A company official said, “Based on Hurim Networks’ long-standing antenna technology expertise, we develop and supply various antennas that meet the needs of domestic and international clients,” adding, “We are actively working to expand market share centered on the two major markets of the United States and Europe.”
He continued, “In particular, we have and are developing a diverse antenna product line for the major U.S. telecom operator AT&T, including Small Cell Canister antennas, DAS antennas, and Stadium antennas,” adding, “Moreover, since we are continuously developing with several clients, we expect to show visible results such as global orders in the near future.”
Meanwhile, Hurim Networks is pushing to establish a local corporation in Germany to expand its presence in the European market. Since most networks in Europe still use 4G bands and are transitioning to 5G, the company expects that orders for Europe will follow once the corporation is established.
