A photo showing a display rack installed in the common corridor in front of an apartment entrance, piled with household items, has sparked controversy online.
On the 9th, a post titled "Currently Controversial Apartment Corridor" was uploaded along with a photo on multiple online communities and social networking services (SNS).
In the accompanying photo, a 5-tier metal display rack is installed in an 'L' shape at the corner of the unit to the right of the apartment elevator. Each tier is filled with various household goods and boxes, and camping equipment appears to be placed on top of the rack. Next to the storage rack are a bicycle and a stroller, and an umbrella is spread out right in front of the door.
Netizens are divided between those who consider it a nuisance by the resident and those who think it is acceptable. Opponents responded with comments such as, "I've seen people extend their balconies for personal use, but this is the first time I've seen someone extend the common corridor," "They've basically made a storage room," and "Since it's placed in a common area, everyone can use those items."
On the other hand, supporters said, "Isn't that something neighbors can understand and live with?" "If it was agreed upon with the next-door neighbor and doesn't cause any harm, I think it's fine," and "That is the only house on that line, so what's the problem?"
According to the Act on Installation and Management of Firefighting Facilities, in the event of a fire in apartment corridors or staircases, evacuation routes used by many people, fire compartments, and areas around fire prevention facilities, placing items or obstacles can result in a fine of up to 3 million KRW.
However, items stored temporarily and that can be moved immediately without obstructing evacuation, or items stored at the end of a corridor that is blocked off so as not to interfere with evacuation or firefighting activities, are exempt from fines.
