Yoon Attends Korean Community Meeting as First Schedule in India Visit... "India, an Important Partner for Korea"

The Overseas Korean Affairs Office Launching in June Will Be a Strong Supportive Shield

President Yoon Suk-yeol visited India, the host country of the Group of Twenty (G20) summit, on the 8th (local time) and described India as "an important partner with whom we must cultivate a free, peaceful, and prosperous Indo-Pacific based on freedom, human rights, and the rule of law."

At a dinner meeting with the Korean community held at a hotel in New Delhi that day, President Yoon stated, "The Korea-India relationship has continuously developed up to this year, marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations."

Regarding Korean companies entering the Indian market, he emphasized, "Since the early 1990s, when India began economic liberalization, our companies boldly entered India, and now brands like Samsung, LG, Hyundai, and Kia have become beloved in India. Recently, our companies have expanded into sectors such as finance, defense, food, and clothing."

He also expressed gratitude for the efforts of the Korean community, saying, "Thanks to your efforts in pioneering the Indian market alongside our companies, the bilateral relationship has developed to this extent."

Referring to the Overseas Koreans Office launched in June, President Yoon explained, "It will closely connect the motherland and you, becoming a global business hub and a strong support system for overseas Koreans."

He continued, "We will also provide services tailored to your on-site needs as you devote yourselves to business activities," and requested, "Please continue to work hard on the front lines of economic cooperation between the two countries. If you face difficulties or have any requests for the motherland’s government, please feel free to speak openly at any time."

President Yoon also said, "The Republic of Korea will contribute more to the international community and take a more active role in solving global challenges. This contributes to the world’s freedom, peace, and prosperity, and at the same time, it is for the benefit of the Republic of Korea."

Kang Ho-bong, president of the Korean Association, said in his welcoming remarks, "Unlike other overseas Koreans who mostly left India following the home country’s evacuation order during the difficult COVID-19 pandemic, most of our community stayed in India and overcame hardships together with Indians," emphasizing, "This has become an opportunity to further elevate the status of Koreans."
