A research team led by Wang Zhongkun at the Guangzhou Institute of Biomedicine and Health in China published their findings yesterday in the international journal Cell Stem Cell, reporting the creation of pig embryos with human kidneys inside a sow's body.

While human blood or skeletal muscle tissues have been generated using pig bodies before, this is the first time a complete organ has been grown inside an animal body.

The study utilized CRISPR gene-editing technology, which cuts specific parts of genes to edit the genome. The team reportedly removed two specific genes involved in kidney development to prevent stem cells that grow human kidneys from conflicting with other cells inside the pig body.

Previously, MGeneSolution transplanted pancreatic islets from pigs with two genes removed into monkeys, achieving normal blood sugar levels for over seven months. They have currently succeeded in modifying six genes and are accelerating research with a goal of modifying twelve genes.

MGeneSolution was the first in the world to develop cloned pigs that secrete human insulin using CRISPR gene-editing technology. They also succeeded in producing immunodeficient pigs for the first time in Korea.
