Daegu Superintendent of Education Kang Eun-hee Urges Revision of Teacher Protection Laws... Visits National Assembly to Advocate

Daegu Superintendent of Education Kang Eun-hee urged the revision of laws related to child abuse during a meeting with Shin Dong-geun, Chairman of the National Assembly Health and Welfare Committee, on the 7th.


The meeting was arranged as part of measures to establish policies protecting teachers' legitimate educational activities, which have emerged as a social issue following the recent death of a teacher at Seoi Elementary School.

As Kang Eun-hee, Daegu Superintendent of Education, also stated at the ‘Asia Forum 21’ discussion invited by mid-career journalists from Daegu and Gyeongbuk held in Daegu, she pointed out the problem of legitimate student guidance by teachers being misconstrued as child abuse. She emphasized the need to promptly revise related laws such as the Child Welfare Act and the Child Abuse Punishment Act to protect and restore teachers' authority.


Shin Dong-geun (Democratic Party, Incheon Seo-gu Eul), Chairman of the National Assembly Health and Welfare Committee, promised to review and supplement the related bills in the Health and Welfare Committee once they pass through the Education Committee.


Additionally, Superintendent Kang requested cooperation from Kim Do-eup (People Power Party, Busan Buk-gu Gangseo-gu Eul), Chairman of the National Assembly Legislation and Judiciary Committee, to ensure the swift passage of various legislative amendments protecting teachers' legitimate educational activities.


Also attending the meeting were Cho Hee-yeon, Superintendent of Education of Seoul; Do Seong-hoon, Superintendent of Education of Incheon; and Yoon Geon-young, Superintendent of Education of Chungbuk Province.


Based on the comprehensive plan for restoring and strengthening teacher authority announced by the Ministry of Education on August 23, the Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education announced measures to restore teacher authority and strengthen protection of educational activities on August 24. Furthermore, on the 5th, the Daegu Office of Education, under the leadership of the Director of the Education Bureau, actively sought additional opinions from teacher organizations related to the protection of educational activities, striving to prepare effective measures for restoring teacher authority.
