Promotion of 5 Leading Projects and 2 Metropolitan Transportation Network Projects as Core Independent Initiatives
Miryang City in Gyeongnam presented a vision as a forest recreation city leading nano convergence and future agriculture in accordance with the Eastern Gyeongnam Development Plan announced by Park Wan-su, Governor of Gyeongnam Province, on the 7th.
Gyeongnam Province announced the Eastern Gyeongnam Development Plan worth 14.84 trillion KRW by 2030 to develop the eastern Gyeongnam area, where more than 30% of Gyeongnam’s population resides but which has relatively lacked development plans compared to central Gyeongnam based on Changwon National Industrial Complex and western Gyeongnam with the aerospace complex city.

The core projects of Miryang City, mentioned as leading projects of the Eastern Gyeongnam Development Plan, include five projects: ▲ Promotion of the 2nd phase Opportunity Development Special Zone of the Nano Convergence National Industrial Complex ▲ Establishment of the Nano Materials and Products Safety Evaluation Support Center ▲ Construction of the access bridge to the Smart Farm Innovation Valley ▲ Extension of Local Road No. 1051 Miryang-Danjang section ▲ Attraction of the Southern Region National Forest Leisure Sports Center, as well as the construction projects of ▲ Gimhae~Miryang Expressway ▲ Hamyang~Ulsan Expressway.
The city is currently focusing on creating a business-friendly environment by strengthening the research support system through establishing the Nano Materials and Products Safety Evaluation Support Center in the Nano Convergence National Industrial Complex, which has achieved a 76% progress rate in phase 1 and a 47% sales rate, and by creating a hydrogen specialized complex.
In particular, the city plans to promote the phase 2 project in the Obuk-myeon Orye-ri area as an Opportunity Development Special Zone, a key government balanced development project, to further strive for job creation through sustainable regional development.
Additionally, the city plans to construct an access bridge to the Smart Farm Innovation Valley worth 47 billion KRW to improve accessibility to the Smart Farm Innovation Valley and further spread smart agriculture in Gyeongnam.
The city is focusing on attracting the Southern Region National Forest Leisure Sports Center related to Pyochungsa Temple and the Yeongnam Alps forest recreation tourism belt, which are representative local tourist destinations. It is also responding to tourist demand by expanding the Miryang-Danjang section of Local Road No. 1051, a key road network connecting Ulsan, Yangsan, and other areas.
Along with this, Miryang is accelerating the expansion of the metropolitan transportation network, including the currently underway Gimhae~Miryang and Hamyang~Ulsan expressways, as a hub city in the Yeongnam region.
To respond to the one-polar system of the metropolitan area and overcome local extinction, Miryang, emerging as a core base region playing a centripetal role in establishing the Yeongnam economic community centered on Gyeongnam and including Daegu, Busan, and Ulsan, plans to establish and implement its own plan in response to Gyeongnam Province’s Eastern Gyeongnam Development Plan.
Mayor Park Il-ho said, “Miryang City possesses cultural potential that can focus on leading Korea’s advanced strategic industries and spreading the cultural identity of the Yeongnam region, and it is located in a pivotal area that can lead the development of the tourism industry centered on the Yeongnam Alps.” He added, “We will actively cooperate with Gyeongnam Province’s Eastern Gyeongnam Development Plan and connect with Gimhae and Yangsan to create a great Miryang City that is sustainable not only for Eastern Gyeongnam but also for the development of the entire Gyeongnam and Korea’s national balanced development.”
