Forced Investigation to Identify Lawmaker Involved in 'Money Envelope Exchange'

The prosecution investigating the '2021 Democratic Party National Convention Money Envelope Suspicion' has conducted a search and seizure of former aides to former party leader Song Young-gil.

Prosecutors have requested an arrest warrant for the fifth cousin of Justice Minister Cho Kuk, a key figure in the 'private equity fund suspicion,' and there are expectations that Professor Jung Kyung-shim, the minister's wife, will soon be summoned. The Anti-Corruption Investigation Division 2 of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Kim Young-cheol) has been sending prosecutors and investigators to the residences of the aides since the morning of the 7th to secure related materials. It is reported that the prosecution launched the search and seizure to identify the lawmakers who received the money envelopes.

Earlier, the prosecution indicted independent lawmaker Yoon Kwan-seok on charges of receiving a total of 60 million won from primary campaign officials for the purpose of providing it to Democratic Party incumbent lawmakers to support former leader Song's election.

The prosecution did not include the allegation of distributing money envelopes to lawmakers in Yoon's indictment. It appears that the charge of distribution was excluded because the lawmakers who received the money envelopes could not be clearly identified.
