A man in his 50s who caused a disturbance by self-harming with a weapon in front of paramedics, demanding to be taken to the hospital, was arrested by the police.
The Dongdaemun Police Station in Seoul announced on the 6th that they arrested Mr. A on the spot on charges of obstructing official duties.
Mr. A is accused of threatening paramedics who responded to a 119 emergency call at his home in Sinseol-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul, around 8:30 p.m. the previous day by pointing a weapon at himself and saying, "Take me to the hospital. I will die."
At the time, Mr. A had called 119 saying he was in pain and wanted to be hospitalized, but when the paramedics who arrived judged that he did not need to go to the hospital, he caused the disturbance.
As Mr. A continued to threaten self-harm, the police who were dispatched following the paramedics' report arrested him on the spot. It was confirmed that at the time of arrest, Mr. A was neither under the influence of alcohol nor drugs, and had no separate mental illness.
A police official stated, "The paramedics at the scene expressed that they did not want Mr. A to be punished," and added, "We are currently reviewing the legal aspects based on the investigation."
