The former chemical unit site in Dobong-dong, Dobong-gu, and the area around Wondang Village Hanok Library in Banghak-dong will be developed into a Hanok village.

Dobong-gu (Mayor Oh Eon-seok) announced that the areas around San 96-4 in Dobong-dong (35,859㎡) and 543-2 in Banghak-dong (24,146㎡) were finally selected as target sites in the Seoul Hanok Village Development Project competition.

In February this year, Seoul City announced the 'Seoul Hanok 4.0 Re-creation Promotion Plan' to preserve and revitalize Hanok in the city, stating that more than 10 Hanok villages like Bukchon and Eunpyeong will be created over the next 10 years, and started a competition among autonomous districts in June.

After recruiting target sites in July, in August, the Hanok Village Site Selection Committee, composed of external experts in urban planning, Hanok villages, and architecture, reviewed the appropriateness of the selections and the feasibility of the project plans, selecting six sites in five autonomous districts of Seoul, including Dobong-dong and Banghak-dong in Dobong-gu.

Dobong-gu plans to develop the selected San 96-4 area in Dobong-dong (former chemical unit site) into a distinctive Hanok village that takes advantage of the terraced terrain, and the 543-2 area in Banghak-dong (Wondang Village Hanok Library) into a historical and cultural Hanok village harmonizing with Yeonsangun's tomb, Wondangsaem Park, Seoul City Protected Tree No. 1, and Princess Jeongui's tomb.

A district official stated, “Both target sites are adjacent to Bukhansan National Park, so we will maximize the use of their nature-friendly characteristics.”

All Dobong-gu target sites are located in development-restricted zones and will be implemented by Seoul City through public development for new residential land creation. To promote the Hanok village project, the basic plan and management plan will be initiated within this year. After completing the urban management plan (draft) decision (change) procedure next year, the basic and detailed designs for the urban development project will be carried out.

Oh Eon-seok, Mayor of Dobong-gu, said, “We welcome the selection of two target sites in Dobong-gu. Along with the creation of Hanok villages, we will promote plans to revitalize Dobongsan tourism and regional activation policies linked with Changdong Seoul Arena, injecting great vitality into the local economy as a whole.” He added, “We will actively support the development so that it can become a representative landmark of Seoul.”
