Installation of Artistic Works on Distribution Boxes between Bangbae Station and Naebang Station in Seocho-gu

Seocho-gu (Mayor Jeon Seong-su) has transformed electrical distribution boxes, which are electrical facilities installed on sidewalks, into the ‘Seoripul Distribution Box Gallery’ by adorning them with works by young artists.

Distribution boxes are ground-level electrical distribution devices such as transformers and distribution panels installed on sidewalks by Korea Electric Power Corporation. Although essential for power supply, they have been considered a detriment to urban aesthetics.

In response, the district office initiated this project to transform distribution boxes into design facilities that harmonize with the surrounding urban environment, thereby enhancing city aesthetics and creating streets where people want to walk.

The installation section of this distribution box gallery spans a 700-meter stretch between Bangbae Station and Naebang Station on Bangbae-ro, featuring a total of 26 distribution boxes decorated with artworks, allowing anyone walking along the street to enjoy them.

This project is part of the district’s ongoing ‘Youth Gallery Support Project,’ aimed at providing exhibition spaces for young artists and cultural spaces for residents in their daily lives. Since 2019, the district has connected young artists with local cafes to exhibit and sell their works in these cafes.

This year, the project expanded beyond cafes to outdoor locations. Starting in March, the Youth Gallery was installed at bus stops, launching the ‘Seoripul Bus Stop Gallery,’ and from this month, the ‘Seoripul Distribution Box Gallery’ operation has also begun. The district has supported young artists by providing exhibition spaces and holding special exhibitions. From 2019 to this year, artists have sold a total of 34 works, generating approximately 20 million KRW in revenue.

Through this initiative, the district expects to further enhance Seocho-gu’s cultural and artistic image, create streets that people want to walk along, and promote the artistic activities of young artists.

The exterior of the distribution boxes uses a wood-textured alloy material to ensure durability and harmony with the surrounding environment. Lighting has also been installed to ensure pedestrian safety and help prevent crime. After a pilot operation and performance analysis on Bangbae-ro, the district plans to expand the installation of distribution box galleries with a unified design to other areas.

Mayor Jeon Seong-su stated, “By creating the Seoripul Distribution Box Gallery, we will actively support the exhibition activities of young artists, improve urban aesthetics, and provide spaces where people can stay, enjoy sights, and walk safely.”
