Seoul Gangseo-gu, Art Installation 'Vertical Garden' Evokes Modern Life and Magok's Golden Rice Fields... Provides Citizens with Another Spectacle Through Brilliant Night Lighting
"Come visit Magok Culture Street, where colorful dandelion seeds filled with messages of hope and golden rice welcome you."
Gangseo-gu, Seoul announced that it has installed nine 'LED pole landscape lights' modeled after dandelions and an art piece called the 'Vertical Garden,' reminiscent of rice dyed in Magok's golden hue, along Magok Culture Street.
Magok Culture Street is a connected green space section of about 1 km from Magok Station to Balsan Station on Line 5.
Since 2020, the district has divided the entire Magok Culture Street into three zones: Magok Station Zone, Culture & Arts Zone, and Balsan Station Zone, installing exhibits in phases.
The Magok Culture Street development project began to meet local residents' cultural demands and expand opportunities for cultural enjoyment, aiming for the successful development of the Magok district and the creation of a vibrant cultural street within the area.
Existing public art project works such as 'Cloud Emblem' and 'Landscape: Waves of Light' provide new attractions for residents, making Magok Culture Street a young people's sanctuary where people, culture, and commerce harmonize.
The newly created 'Dandelion (LED lighting)' is shaped like the familiar plant's seeds, expressing a hopeful message of life, birth, and freedom.
The dandelions installed in the Magok Station Zone consist of nine LED lights about 5 meters high and are expected to become a symbolic landmark representing Magok Culture Street.
The 'Vertical Garden,' created by sculptor and installation artist Kim Byung-ho, was installed in the Culture & Arts Zone. It reconstructs the industrialization process into small particles, representing the living environment of modern people while evoking rice dyed in Magok's golden color.
Before its development into the current advanced industrial complex, Magok District was Seoul's last granary area, and the golden rice imagery adds meaning by recalling its fields.
The Vertical Garden is installed in front of 'SpaceK Museum,' the first public art museum in southwestern Seoul, attracting the attention of those interested in art and culture.
Especially, these works offer another spectacle at night with their splendid lighting.
A district official said, "After in-depth discussions with artists and related parties, we planned exhibits that can enhance the artistry and symbolism of Magok Culture Street. We hope for much interest and visits as we strive to provide abundant attractions for citizens."
