People Power Party Holds Floor Strategy Meeting on the 5th

The People Power Party stated on the 5th that independent lawmaker Yoon Mi-hyang, who attended the memorial ceremony for the massacre of Koreans during the Great Kanto Earthquake hosted by the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon), should be expelled.

Yoon Jae-ok, the floor leader of the People Power Party, said at the party strategy meeting held at the National Assembly on the same day, "Chongryon can be seen as a pro-North Korean organization operating in Japan under the directive of the Workers' Party of Korea," adding, "It is a clear reason for expulsion of a National Assembly member that a South Korean lawmaker voluntarily attended such an event without invitation and merely sat quietly while the event referred to our government as the South Korean puppet regime."

Floor leader Yoon pointed out, "Attending an event hosted by an anti-state organization and condoning and sympathizing with their defamation of the Korean government?if that is not an anti-state and anti-Republic of Korea act, then what is it?" He added, "Even though there was a civilian-organized event, lawmaker Yoon deliberately attended the Chongryon event, which reveals where her true allegiance lies."

The People Power Party submitted a disciplinary proposal demanding Yoon's expulsion the previous day. They also raised the issue of the Democratic Party's responsibility. Floor leader Yoon said, "The Democratic Party, which has remained silent until now, is also problematic," and "The Democratic Party must officially state its position on lawmaker Yoon Mi-hyang's attendance at the Chongryon event." He continued, "Although Yoon is currently an independent, the entire nation knows she is effectively acting as a Democratic Party lawmaker," and "Wasn't it the Democratic Party that originally gave her the badge? Pretending not to know is a cowardly act."

Park Dae-chul, chairman of the Policy Committee, also criticized, saying, "She is showing the height of shamelessness," and "The Democratic Party, which gave her the badge, is now practicing silent meditation."

Chairman Park pressured, "If the Democratic Party does not want to give up being a legitimate party of the Republic of Korea, it should take the lead in expelling lawmaker Yoon unless it sympathizes with her anti-state acts."

Kim Seok-ki, the ruling party's secretary of the Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee, also asked, "Why is the Democratic Party silent?" and "What is the position of leader Lee Jae-myung regarding lawmaker Yoon's blatant pro-North activities by attending an anti-state organization event?"

Kim said, "Stop the absurd fasting protest immediately and respond to this," adding, "We must actively cooperate in processing the expulsion proposal for lawmaker Yoon and work together to restore the discipline of the country and the National Assembly."
