Selected for Two Consecutive Years as the Only Nationwide Pilot Project for Low-Carbon Rice Paddy Water Management
Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do, successfully completed farmer education to promote low-carbon agriculture as part of its efforts to achieve carbon neutrality in agricultural and food products.
According to the county on the 4th, in line with the expansion of low-carbon agriculture this year, a touring education program on activating low-carbon agriculture was conducted over two months from July to August for more than 200 eco-friendly rice farmers across 14 towns and townships.

As the final session of this education program, a comprehensive training was held on the 1st at the large conference room of Haenam County Office, attended by about 100 farmers.
The training invited expert lecturers in related fields, including Dr. Lee In and Dr. Lee Bong-cheol, to educate participants on overall aspects necessary for low-carbon agriculture focused on rice cultivation, such as low-carbon agricultural product production and certification methods, and high-quality rice production techniques through rice paddy water management technology dissemination.
Low-carbon agriculture refers to farming techniques that reduce greenhouse gas emissions by cutting down on inputs such as fertilizers, pesticides, agricultural materials, and energy throughout the agricultural production process. It is an essential part of practicing carbon neutrality in the agricultural sector.
In particular, rice paddy water management technology not only reduces carbon emissions but also improves rice quality, maintains root vitality, and increases lodging resistance, which is expected to greatly benefit farmers.
Haenam-gun has been uniquely selected for two consecutive years nationwide for the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs’ low-carbon rice paddy water management pilot project, leading the initiative on 234 hectares in the areas of Gyegok-myeon and Masan-myeon.
A county official stated, “We plan to continue conducting step-by-step education related to low-carbon agriculture to proactively respond to the climate change crisis. Voluntary participation by farmers is crucial to practicing carbon neutrality. We will spare no support to ensure the successful implementation of related projects in Haenam, a leader in low-carbon agriculture.”
