"Must File a Case with the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea"
On the fifth day of his hunger strike, Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, criticized President Yoon Suk-yeol regarding the Japanese government's discharge of contaminated water from Fukushima, saying, "The president must properly perform his duties to protect the sovereignty of the Republic of Korea's territorial waters and ensure the safety of the people."
At the Supreme Council meeting held at the hunger strike tent in front of the National Assembly main building that morning, Lee said, "An unprecedented event of contaminated water being discharged is occurring, and neighboring countries and their citizens are raising concerns, but what about the Republic of Korea, which is inevitably the most affected?"
He continued, "President Yoon treats the people as adversaries to fight against despite their legitimate concerns," and criticized, "The government intends to rename the contaminated water as 'treated water'."
He then emphasized, "It is not too late even now. We must boldly demand that Japan stop discharging nuclear contaminated water and file a complaint with the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea to halt Japan's unjust actions."
Regarding former Marine Corps Investigation Unit Commander Park Jeong-hoon, who was dismissed while investigating the case of Corporal Chae, who died in the recent flood recovery operations, Lee said, "Why was the investigation result, which even the minister approved, overturned? Who is behind the absurd charge of insubordination imposed on the investigation unit commander and the attempt to detain him?" He criticized, "The Yoon Suk-yeol administration, which suppresses the investigation unit commander trying to reveal the truth, is itself a collective insubordination force."
He stressed, "The Democratic Party will use all means, including special prosecutors and parliamentary audits, to uncover the truth behind this unjust death and to clearly expose any suspicions of truth concealment."
