SK Telecom announced on the 1st that it has completed the construction of a 5G national network in line with Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education's adoption of smart work.
The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education was the first among nationwide educational administrative institutions to introduce 5G to ensure the stable establishment of smart work. After pilot operations in July and August, it will be expanded to all departments starting in September. With the introduction of 5G, work can be handled even while on business trips or in moving vehicles through a mobile work environment using laptops.
The 5G national network is a dedicated 5G network with enhanced security to enable rapid work on-site using 5G. Until now, education office staff could not access the education office administrative network via Wi-Fi or wireless, but with the opening of the 5G national network, they can conveniently perform public duties anytime and anywhere.
A dedicated device (mobile gateway) that separately processes pre-registered work laptop signals was established to allow access to the administrative network only for wireless signals from ultra-light modems provided to all education office staff for laptops, and network slicing technology was applied. This completely separates the 5G data signals used by the general public.
At the same time, reflecting the characteristics of the education office such as frequent video conferences and event spaces where traffic concentrates within the building, additional 5G base stations were constructed and optimized. Advanced security technologies such as quantum cryptography and next-generation external access solutions (SDP) were applied to block hacking and create an environment where work can be safely performed even from outside.
A Cloud PC system is also provided. Through 'Cloud X,' a virtual desktop solution independently developed by SK Broadband based on domestic core technology, users can safely access the same PC environment anytime and anywhere. It also optimizes video conference traffic to provide a stable screen and supports integrated monitoring functions linked with the 5G national network management system.
Additionally, a laptop check-in/out system was established so that access to the administrative network is blocked when laptops not pre-approved are used outside the building. The management system efficiently manages employees' data usage and can immediately block modem loss or unauthorized access.
Employees of the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education have also responded positively to the changes in the work environment. With the construction of the 5G national network, employees at the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education headquarters can choose to work at the southern or northern office buildings for as many days as they wish, depending on the nature of their work.
Employees who participated in the pilot operation said, "Fatigue from long commutes has decreased and work concentration has improved," and "The introduction of a flexible work method has allowed us to use time more efficiently to support school sites."
Based on the successful adoption by the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education, SKT plans to expand the project to other public institutions and local governments.
Shin Yong-sik, Head of SKT Enterprise CIC, said, "There is growing demand in government departments to reduce security risks while improving work efficiency," and added, "We will strive to enable more public institutions to use our superior network and security technologies compared to other companies."
Na Ui-shin, Director of Operations Support at the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education, stated, "The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education will establish a smart work environment based on autonomy and flexibility to achieve a new future in educational administration."
