Scania Launches 'Scania Super' Truck with 8% Improved Fuel Efficiency

Scania Korea Super Truck Launch Event on the 31st

"The popularity of the Scania brand in Europe is so high that production cannot keep up with demand. We will achieve a resurgence in the Korean market through the 'Super' equipped with a new powertrain."

Jarkko Ketola, the new CEO of Scania Korea, expressed this ambition at the 'Scania Super' launch event held on the 31st at the Swiss Grand Hotel in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul. The Swedish commercial vehicle brand Scania unveiled the 'Scania Super' diesel engine truck, equipped with the most efficient powertrain in the brand's history, for the first time in the domestic market on this day.

The 'Scania Super' revealed on this day is a truck equipped with a new powertrain developed by Scania over the past five years with sustainability goals. Scania developed a powertrain with 8% improved fuel efficiency compared to previous models through an investment of about 3 trillion KRW. Scania emphasized that the new powertrain meets not only current emission standards but also future standards that will be implemented.

The core element of the Scania Super powertrain, the 13ℓ diesel engine, offers a wide range of outputs from 420 horsepower up to 560 horsepower. In Korea, products with 460, 500, and 560 horsepower will be launched. CEO Ketola said, "Some ask why we are introducing a new diesel engine powertrain at this time," adding, "An 8% improvement in fuel efficiency in the energy-intensive transportation business significantly contributes to reducing global carbon emissions."

The Super engine was designed with advanced technology prioritizing fuel efficiency improvement. Operating time and service life were increased while maintenance and weight were reduced. Scania's goal is to maximize economic efficiency through this. Scania made significant improvements in many areas including combustion, lubrication, cooling functions, and turbocharging of the Super engine. It also applied a uniquely designed twin Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system, a new design of dual overhead camshaft, and a powerful engine management system.

Additionally, a gearbox that reduces weight by 60kg compared to previous models through design and active use of aluminum was introduced in this new truck. This gearbox not only improves fuel efficiency but also ensures comfortable driving with fast and smooth gear shifts.

Scania Korea also introduced the 'Ecolution 2.0', a Scania Super service solution, and a two-year warranty program for genuine parts. Ecolution is a customer-tailored solution that enhances vehicle operational efficiency through various advanced driving assistance features and driver training. The two-year genuine parts warranty program extends the existing one-year warranty period by an additional year, providing a total of two years of quality assurance. This program was launched in Korea as the second market after the UK.

Meanwhile, CEO Ketola expressed a cautious stance on the launch of eco-friendly trucks in Korea. Scania is considering a shift towards electric trucks rather than hydrogen fuel cell trucks and plans to review the launch of electric trucks once sufficient charging infrastructure for large trucks is secured in Korea.
