China's Huawei 'Surprise Launch' Smartphone: A Warning Shot to the US?

GT "Secret Semiconductor Factory Construction, US Exaggeration"
Huawei Announces First Half Results... Profits Triple

The surprise launch of China's Huawei's latest smartphone model, the 'Mate60 Pro,' is being interpreted locally as a strategic move considering the visit schedule of the U.S. Secretary of Commerce to China.

On the 30th, the Chinese state media Global Times (GT) reported in an editorial that Huawei's unannounced start of pre-sales for the Mate60 Pro has become a hot topic, and many people are paying attention to the fact that it took place during U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo's visit to China.

On that day, Huawei began pre-order sales of the Mate60 Pro model through its official online store. The price is 6,999 yuan (approximately 1.27 million KRW). Although specific technical specifications, including whether 5G is supported, and the exact release date have not been disclosed, it is expected to appear on the market on the 12th of next month, when Apple’s iPhone 15 will be unveiled. This comes about a year after the release of its predecessor, the Mate50. Above all, this sale attracted attention because it was carried out without any prior promotion, press conference, or advance notice.

GT emphasized, "Most of the U.S. regulations on China in the advanced technology sector are implemented through the Department of Commerce," adding, "Regardless of Huawei’s intentions, this new product launch carries a deep meaning for many Chinese netizens to 'stand up against U.S. pressure.'"

Specifically regarding Huawei, GT explained, "Huawei is the Chinese company most severely impacted by U.S. technology regulations," and "It faces the critical challenge of overcoming the shortage of 5G technology chips." It further elaborated, "This issue is regarded as a key indicator of Chinese companies’ ability to withstand fierce competition and suppression by the U.S."

Furthermore, GT stated, "In the ongoing technology war where the U.S. holds an advantage in advanced technology, the Chinese people's drive and moral conviction to catch up despite pressure is something the U.S. cannot match," and "Chinese companies will inevitably break through the blockade and move forward." It also asserted, "The revival of Huawei smartphones after three years of forced silence is sufficient proof that the U.S.'s extreme suppression has failed," adding, "This is also a microcosm of the U.S.-China technology war and foreshadows the final outcome of the entire process."

Regarding recent reports in the U.S. that Huawei is secretly building a semiconductor factory, GT called them "exaggerated reports," criticizing that "ultimately, they fail to see or believe the trend and cling to the outdated notion that all Chinese technology has been stolen."

Meanwhile, Huawei also announced its performance for the first half of this year, reporting profits more than tripled compared to last year. During this period, sales increased by 3.2% year-on-year to 308.29 billion yuan, and profits surged 218% to 14.629 billion yuan. Research and development (R&D) expenses also rose 4.4% from last year to 82.64 billion yuan. The China Securities Journal described this as the 'Return of the King,' reporting that Huawei has invested 977.3 billion yuan in R&D over the past decade.
