Shinan-gun Forms Joint Public-Private Task Force for Nuclear Power Plant Contaminated Water Response

Emergency Meeting Held on the Discharge of Contaminated Water from Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant in Japan

On the 28th, Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Park Woo-ryang) held an emergency countermeasure meeting regarding the discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant, attended by the Shinan-gun Council, Shinan-gun Fisheries Cooperative heads, representatives of fisheries organizations, and about 50 fishermen.

According to the county on the 30th, due to the recent decline in consumer sentiment, among the seafood produced locally, rockfish (jopibollak) amounts to 4,000 tons annually, and abalone reaches 1,400 tons annually. However, due to the discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant, falling shipment prices, and decreased transactions by middlemen, the wholesale price of abalone has plummeted to 50% of the average price.

Representatives of fisheries organizations and fishermen proposed to Shinan-gun at the countermeasure meeting methods to revitalize consumption in response to the nuclear power plant contaminated water discharge, such as proving seafood safety and expanding processing facilities for processing (semi-dried products).

As a result of this meeting, Shinan-gun decided to distribute simple radiation detectors to places with high seafood trading volume such as auction markets, and in cooperation with the Salt Industry Research Center, utilize the currently operating gamma nuclide analyzer to produce and attach stickers that can prove the safety of seafood, including radioactivity, for all seafood from the region just before shipment, thereby improving the distribution system.

In particular, by forming a joint public-private task force dedicated to responding to the nuclear power plant contaminated water, Shinan-gun plans to make every effort to ensure the safety of Shinan seafood and promote the consumption of safe, clean Shinan seafood.

Governor Park Woo-ryang stated, “Along with the county’s own consumption campaign, we will do our best to take responsibility for the consumption of local seafood and the hygienic and safe dining tables of the public through seafood consumption promotion events linked with our sister cities and hometown associations.”
