Weekly Inspection of Mart and Seafood Processing and Handling Businesses
Osan City in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 29th that it will form a 'Special Safety Inspection Team' as part of measures to address the marine discharge of contaminated water from Fukushima, Japan.
The city explained that this decision was made at an emergency countermeasure meeting chaired by Mayor Lee Gwon-jae immediately after the contaminated water was discharged into the ocean on the 24th.
At the meeting, Mayor Lee stated, “Ensuring the citizens' peace of mind is the top priority,” and instructed ▲organic cooperation with the central government and Gyeonggi Province ▲formation of a safety inspection task force (TF).
The city specifically prepared a special inspection plan and formed the Special Safety Inspection Team. The inspection team, composed of related departments such as the Agriculture and Livestock Policy Division, Food Hygiene Division, Regional Economy Division, and honorary monitors, will conduct weekly inspections of about 120 large marts and seafood manufacturing, processing, and handling businesses within the jurisdiction until the end of September.
The inspection team will carry out origin control and simple tests using portable radiation detectors. The main focus of the inspection will be seafood with a high proportion of Japanese origin.
Along with this, the city plans to promote information on seafood radiation safety through the city hall website and social networking services (SNS).
Mayor Lee requested, “If people doubt and avoid consuming even seafood proven to be safe, small business owners and self-employed individuals in the region will suffer severe damage,” and urged, “We ask all citizens to join in promoting the consumption of safe seafood.”
