LG Electronics aims for in-year home appliance interoperability with Samsung Electronics
Targeting key global markets including Korea, the US, and Europe
Starting with washing machines, dryers, and dishwashers
LG Electronics is taking the lead in expanding the smart home ecosystem through its smart home platform, LG ThinQ. The company is promoting interoperability among home appliances with major global appliance companies, including Samsung Electronics and Turkish appliance manufacturer Vestel.
On the 29th, LG Electronics announced that it is collaborating with Samsung Electronics to achieve interoperability between the two companies' home appliances within this year. Starting with key product lines such as washing machines, dryers, and dishwashers in major global markets including Korea, the United States, and Europe, the scope will gradually be expanded.
Once interoperable, users will be able to check and control the status of major home appliances and HVAC devices from both companies through a single application. There will be no need to switch back and forth between LG ThinQ and Samsung SmartThings to control LG washing machines or Samsung dishwashers; once registered in advance, Samsung smart appliances can be controlled via LG ThinQ.
This is the first commercial achievement of the HCA (Home Connectivity Alliance) standard 1.0, which was introduced at CES 2023 by the smart home platform consortium. LG Electronics plans to expand appliance interoperability cooperation not only with Samsung Electronics but also across all HCA member companies. It has also decided to engage in full-scale discussions on appliance interoperability with Turkish appliance manufacturer Vestel.
Established in January 2022, HCA consists of major home appliance and HVAC companies as members and aims to interconnect the smart home platforms operated by each member company on the cloud. LG Electronics serves as the chair company of HCA and is leading the commercialization of the HCA standard 1.0. In addition to appliance interoperability, the alliance plans to provide more functions and services that enhance customer convenience, such as integrated energy management in the future.
Meanwhile, LG Electronics is accelerating the expansion of the smart home ecosystem not only through HCA but also by actively participating as the chair company of the global standards alliance CSA (Connectivity Standards Alliance). CSA is an organization that develops and standardizes open communication protocol specifications for smart home devices, with over 500 member companies participating. LG Electronics is actively involved in the development and standardization of 'Matter,' an IP-based home IoT communication standard technology led by CSA.
Jung Ki-hyun, Vice President of LG Electronics’ Platform Business Center, said, "Through LG Electronics’ smart home platform LG ThinQ, we will expand a barrier-free home appliance ecosystem and provide new smart home experiences to more customers."
