Mokpo City Promotes 'Gourmet Tourism City Mokpo' in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia's Capital

Participating in '2023 Hangukjugan' to Promote Tourism Resources and Export-Ready Gim Products

Mokpo City worked hard to widely promote "Mokpo, Korea's Tourism Hub City, Mokpo, the City of Gourmet Tourism" in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, known as the "Land of the Red Hero."

According to the city on the 28th, from the 25th to the 27th, Mokpo participated in the "2023 Korea Week" event held at Sukhbaatar Square in Ulaanbaatar, enthusiastically promoting Mokpo's tourism resources to Mongolian citizens and foreign tourists.

Korea Week is an event co-hosted by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Mongolia and Ulaanbaatar City, held annually during the peak tourism season to share cultural and tourism resources between the two countries and to promote mutual growth and development of the cultural and tourism industries.

This year’s event featured Mongolian traditional music performances, Korea Kukkiwon Taekwondo demonstrations, and K-POP concerts. Korean public institutions and companies based in Mongolia also participated by operating promotional booths, with Mokpo City being the only basic local government in Korea to operate a special tourism promotion booth.

Considering the high popularity and enthusiasm for K-content in Mongolia, the city screened media promotional videos introducing dramas and movies set in Mokpo and used photo spots created with real promotional photos to showcase Mokpo’s charm.

In particular, the city actively promoted a generous incentive program offering up to 50,000 to 60,000 KRW per person to travel agencies that attract foreign tourists, including Mongolians who visited Mokpo this year.

Additionally, visitors were given various promotional materials, souvenirs, and Korean convenience store snacks favored by younger generations, gaining great popularity and further energizing on-site promotion.

Furthermore, to target the high interest of Mongolian citizens in seaweed-related food products, the city operated tasting booths for snacks such as seaweed snacks and fried seaweed, and displayed seaweed products including seasoned seaweed flakes, gopchang seaweed, green laver, gimbap seaweed, seasoned seaweed, and seaweed powder, conducting export promotion activities simultaneously.

Mayor Park Hong-ryul stated, “We widely promoted the charm of Mokpo, a marine tourism city and a popular filming location for movies and dramas, to Mongolian citizens who have a strong longing for the sea and islands and a high interest in K-dramas,” adding, “To expand seaweed exports, which have confirmed high popularity as K-food, we will explore and support seaweed processing companies’ entry into the Mongolian market.”

He also said, “Going forward, we will focus even more on global tourism marketing anywhere overseas to make Mokpo a tourism city loved by foreign tourists as well.”
