Dragonfly announced on the 28th that the first match of the Special Force offline summer tournament, the Busan qualifiers, was successfully held.
About 100 participants and spectators took part in the qualifiers held in Busan on the 26th. The participants formed a total of 14 teams of 5 players each and competed in team matches. The matches on that day included the Round of 32 to Quarterfinals in Division 1, Semifinals in Division 2, and the 3rd place match in Division 3. The match brackets, seats, and maps were determined by a draw before the tournament began.
As a result of the Busan qualifiers, two teams, Jjajang Jjamppong and Anonymous, advanced to the finals. The event was hosted by esports specialist caster An Seung-yong, and referees certified by the Korea e-Sports Association officiated the matches.
Dragonfly provided rare firearms that could be permanently used as main weapons to the participating players. Spectators were given firearm coupons through a raffle. During the tournament, a quiz event related to Special Force was held, and Special Force commemorative T-shirts were given to both players and spectators.
The Special Force offline summer tournament has attracted attention as it resumed after 6 years. The next match, the Seoul qualifiers, will be held on the 2nd of next month. In particular, the competitive spirit is heating up as players participating in the Seoul qualifiers are watching the Busan qualifiers matches for monitoring competing teams.
The finals will be held on the 16th of next month, where four teams selected through nationwide qualifiers will compete for the top spot. Commentary will be provided by On Sang-min and caster Jung So-rim, and the event will be broadcast live on Dragonfly’s official YouTube channel.
Special Force was adopted as an official esports title in 2005, becoming the first FPS game to produce professional gamers. It also led the popularization of FPS games by holding the number one PC bang market share for 79 consecutive weeks.
Dragonfly plans to continue its legacy with a large-scale update next year to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Special Force. On the 22nd, they released a teaser video previewing the major update, receiving enthusiastic anticipation.
A Dragonfly representative stated, “Since the Special Force tournament is being held for the first time in 6 years, it gathered great expectations and was lively from the first match. We will do our best to prepare for the upcoming Seoul qualifiers and finals to bring enjoyment to Special Force users.”
